Parliament Question: Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in Maharashtra

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.- 2693 ANSWERED ON- 16/03/2026 PRADHAN MANTRI UJJWALA YOJANA IN MAHARASHTRA 2693 SHRI DHANANJAY BHIMRAO MAHADIK: Will the Minister of PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS be pleased to state:- (a) whether the Central Government has reviewed the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in the state of Maharashtra with specific focus on sustained usage of LPG connections rather than mere distribution and if so, the details thereof; and (b) the corrective steps proposed, including enhanced or targeted subsidy support, flexible refill payment options, stronger monitoring mechanisms and Maharashtra-specific interventions, to ensure long-term adoption of clean cooking fuel under PMUY? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS (SHRI SURESH GOPI) (a) & (b): Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched in May, 2016 with an objective to provide deposit free LPG connection to adult women from poor households across the country. As on 01.03.2026, there were about 10.56 crore PMUY connections across the country including 52.60 lakh connections in the state of Maharashtra. LPG consumption by PMUY beneficiaries is monitored via PPAC reports, CLDP, and OMC meetings, and depends on food habits, household size, cooking style, preferences, price, and alternate fuels. Consumers can book refills through IVRS, SMS, WhatsApp, distributor calls, e-commerce platforms, OMC apps, and web portals for hassle-free access. To encourage LPG use, the government offers 14.2 kg to 5 kg swaps, 5 kg double bottle connections, LPG Panchayats, and awareness campaigns. In addition, for FY 2025-26, Government is providing targeted subsidy of Rs.300/- per 14.2 kg cylinder for upto 9 refills of 14.2 Kg cylinder (and proportionately pro-rated for 5 Kg connections) to the PMUY consumers. As a result of these measures, LPG consumption for PMUY beneficiaries in Maharashtra has increased from 302.43 TMT (FY 2022-23) to 371.82 TMT (FY 2025-26). ******
