Parliament Question: Price of petrol and diesel

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO-2689 ANSWERED ON- 16/03/2026 PRICE OF PETROL AND DIESEL 2689 SHRI SANDOSH KUMAR P: Will the Minister of PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS be pleased to state: (a) the details of the price of petrol and diesel during the last three years State-wise; (b) whether Government is aware of the inter-State variation in the price of petrol and diesel across the country; (c) whether Government is aware of the negative impact of this inter-State variation on commerce and industry in each State; and (d) if so, whether Government has any plan to bring petroleum products under GST? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS (SHRI SURESH GOPI) (a) State-wise details of RSP of Petrol and Diesel since April 2024, as on 1st April of each year, are given at Annexure. (b) & (c) Prices of petrol and diesel are market determined and Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) take appropriate decision on pricing of petrol and diesel. The final selling prices of petrol and diesel include excise duty fixed by the Central Government and State Value Added Tax (VAT)/Taxes fixed by the respective State Governments. The prices of petrol and diesel in the States across the country vary due to differing freight rates, VAT/local levies etc. PSU OMCs have also carried out an intra-state freight rationalisation to reduce price differentials within a state. (d) The GST Council in its 45th meeting held on 17th September 2021 had considered the inclusion of Petrol/Diesel and other petroleum products under the GST regime but the matter was deferred by the Council. *****Annexure Annexure referred to in reply to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2689 for part (a) asked by Shri Sandosh Kumar P answered on 16.03.2026 regarding “Price of Petrol and Diesel”.
