1263. SHRIJAGANNATHSARKAR:
Will the Ministerof HEALTH AND FAMILYWELFAREbe pleasedtostate:
(a) the details of the districts which do not have any Government medical college in the country,
State/UT-wise along with the population of each such district as per the latest Census or official
estimates;
(b) the totalnumberof districts with a populationabove 5lakh,10lakhand15lakhthatare
currentlywithout a Government medicalcollegeinthe country, district-wise; and
(c)the detailsof anyconcrete roadmapof the Government alongwith timelines toensure that
high-population districts without Government medical colleges are prioritised for opening of
newmedicalcolleges soasto reduce regionalhealthcaredisparities?

(a) to (c) As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), there are a total of 818
medical colleges, including (AIIMS and INIs), across the country as of now. The State/UT-wise
detailsof these medicalcolleges are at Annexure-I.
Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS)
for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with
preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government
or private medical college. A total of 157 Medical Colleges have been approved in the various
districts across the country. State wise details of Medical Colleges approved under the scheme are
at Annexure-II. Further, support has also been provided for Strengthening/Upgradation of existing
Sate Government/Central Government medical colleges to increase the number of MBBS (UG)
and PG seats under another CSS Scheme. Under these schemes, additional 4977 MBBS seats and
8058PGseats have beenapprovedinmedicalcolleges across the country.
