Parliament Question: Progress and coverage of FHTCs under the JJM

MAYA NAROLIYA: Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state: (a) the current status of Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in the country, particularly in the State of Madhya Pradesh and the total number and percentage of rural households covered so far; (b) the details of the States and Union Territories that have achieved 100 per cent 'Har Ghar Jal' (tap water in every home), the status so far and the timeline set for achieving universal coverage in the remaining States; and (c) the updated status of tap water supply coverage in schools and Anganwadi centers across the country particularly in the State of Madhya Pradesh? Page 1 of 2Statement referred in reply of Rajya Sabha Starred Question No. 19 answered on 02.02.2026 (a) to (c) Government of India is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), in partnership with states to make provision of tap water supply to every rural household as well as public institutions in villages like schools, anganwadi centres, ashramshalas (tribal residential schools), health centres, Gram Panchayat building, etc., across the country, including those in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Significant progress has been made in the country since the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission, towards enhancing access to tap water to rural households. At the start of Jal Jeevan Mission in August 2019, only 3.23 crore (16.72%) rural households were reported to have tap water connections. So far, as reported by states, more than 12.55 crore additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections under JJM. Thus, as on 28.01.2026, out of 19.36 crore rural households in the country, more than 15.79 crore (81.56%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes and works for the remaining households are at various stages of implementation as per saturation plan of the respective State/ UT. Similarly, as reported by Madhya Pradesh, as on 28.01.2026, out of 111.38 lakh rural households, around 81.72 lakh (73.38%) rural households are reported to have tap water supply in their home. So far, 11 States/ Union Territories, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Mizoram, Punjab, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra Nagar Haveli & Daman Diu (DNH & DD), and Puducherry, have achieved 100% coverage of rural households and have attained the 'Har Ghar Jal (HGJ)' status. State of Madhya Pradesh has reported tap water supply connection in 75,931 (81%) schools and 43,875 (65%) anganwadi centres.
