Parliament Question: Reduction of GER in Andhra Pradesh

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF SCHOOL EDUCATION & LITERACY RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO-2907 ANSWERED ON 18.03.2026 Reduction of GER in Andhra Pradesh 2907 Shri Golla Baburao: Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state: (a) whether as per UDISE, GER in primary, upper primary and high schools in Andhra Pradesh was 96.3,102.4 and 95.5 percent respectively in 2023-24 which has come down to 91.9, 101 and 89.4 percent respectively in 2025-26; (b) if so, reasons therefor; (c) whether State Government has cancelled 1000 CBSE schools in Andhra Pradesh; (d) whether enrolment in private schools has gone up and how Government looks at increase of students in private schools and reduction in Government schools in State; (e) reasons why dropout rate in Government schools in State has gone up to 15.5 percent in higher secondary, 3.7 percent in upper primary; and (f) remedial action proposed to be taken? Dropout Rate India Andhra Pradesh Year Primary Upper Primary Secondary Primary Upper Primary Secondary 2022-23 7.8 8.1 16.4 0 8.1 14.7 2023-24 1.9 5.2 14.1 0.2 5.2 12.5 2024-25 0.3 3.5 11.5 1.4 3.5 15.5 As per report titled ‘Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS)’ for the year 2023-24 released by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the major reasons for the students who never attended the schools are to supplement household income, to attend domestic chores, education not considered necessary, etc. Education is in the concurrent list of the Constitution and majority of the schools are under the domain of respective State and UT Governments. The Central Government assist States and UTs through the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Samagra Shiksha and hot cooked meal provided from Balvatika to class 8 under Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) Yojna. Financial assistance/grant is also provided to the States and UTs for various activities to reduce dropout and increase enrolment in Government schools, which include opening/strengthening of new schools up to Senior Secondary level, strengthening school infrastructure, setting up and up gradation and running of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) upto class 12, setting up of residential schools/hostels named Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Avasiya Vidyalayas, hostels under Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM- JANMAN) and Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA), transport allowance, undertaking enrolment drives, seasonal hostels/residential camps, provision of vocational education and ICT facilities in schools, providing free text books and free uniform, transport/escort facility, etc, financial assistance/grant is also provided for aids and appliances for children with special needs. ******
