GOVERNMENTOFINDIA MINISTRYOFHEALTH AND FAMILYWELFARE DEPARTMENTOFHEALTH AND FAMILYWELFARE LOK SABHA UNSTARREDQUESTION NO. 1069 TO BE ANSWERED ON24THJULY, 2026 REGISTRATIONOFNURSES AND MIDWIVES 1069: SHRIANTOANTONY: Will the Minister of HEALTHANDFAMILYWELFAREbe pleasedtostate: (a)the totalnumberof registered nurses andmidwivesinthe country, State/UT-wise; (b) the number of nurses and midwives enrolled on the National Register Tracking System (NRTS), State/UT-wise; (c) whether the Government has assessed the impact of non-enrolment on verification of credentials,inter-State mobilityandworkforce planning, if so, the detailsthereof; and (d) the steps taken by the Government to increase enrolment and address technical and proceduraldifficulties facedby nurses inregistering onthe NRTS? ANSWER THE MINISTER OFSTATE IN THE MINISTRYOFHEALTH AND FAMILYWELFARE (SMT. ANUPRIYAPATEL) (a) to (d): The State Nursing Councils (SNCs) as per the provisions of respective State Act register nurses and midwives. SNCs maintain data base of available nursing personnel practising intheirStatesbyregistering variouscategoriesof Nurses andMidwives. As perthe records received from Indian Nursing Council (INC), there are 46.02 lakh nursing personnel registered. State/UT-wise total number of registered nurses in the country is given at Annexure I. Nurses Registration & Tracking System (NRTS) is a fully computerised interactive system launched by INC in association with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) for maintaining a live register of nursing personnel. Nurses apply to get registered on NRTS and after verification of their data by the concerned State Nursing Council, the nurse is issued a Nurse Unique IdentificationNumber (NUID)Card andNurse Passbook. State/UT-wise totalnumber of enrolled nurses in the NRTS is given at Annexure II. For inter-state mobility Nurses can applytotheirrespective Nursing Councilsfor NOC. NOCletter issent via email/hardcopyto the requested council. INC has conducted meetings with Registrars of State Nursing Councils to facilitate implementation of NRTS. INC also conducts virtual training programmes, provides online user manuals, and operates a dedicated helpdesk and technical support email for resolving registration-related difficulties.
