In response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 863, answered on December 4, 2025, regarding road accidents on National Highways in Kerala, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways (Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari) provided the following information:
The Ministry publishes a report on “Road Accidents in India” based on data received from States/UTs, published up to the year 2023. The report includes data on road accidents, fatalities, and injuries on National Highways in Kerala from 2019 to 2023.
* 2019: 9,459 accidents, 1,259 fatalities, 10,710 injuries.
* 2020: 6,594 accidents, 887 fatalities, 7,354 injuries. (*Covid affected year.)
* 2021: 8,048 accidents, 975 fatalities, 8,984 injuries. (*Covid affected year.)
* 2022: 17,627 accidents, 1,197 fatalities, 17,799 injuries.
* 2023: 10,640 accidents, 1,056 fatalities, 12,105 injuries.
Road accidents are a multi-causal phenomenon resulting from the interplay of various factors, including human error, road condition/environment, and vehicular condition.
Currently, 46 National Highway projects, totaling 834 km in length and costing approximately ₹ 46,965.17 Crore, have been awarded for construction in Kerala. These projects are at various stages of construction and are scheduled for completion by Financial Year 2027-28, in a phased manner.

(a) whether the Government has any statistics regarding the
number of accidents that occurred on National Highways in
Kerala during the last five years and if so, the details including
number of people injured and died thereof;
(b) whether the unscientific construction of National Highways
has caused an increase in the number of accidents;
(c) whether the Government has fixed any time limit for the
completion of ongoing works in Kerala; and
(d) if so, the details thereof, including the estimated cost of
completion of each project that have been finalised?

(a) Government in the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways
publishes report on “Road Accidents in India” based on data received
from States/ UTs, which has been published for the year upto 2023. As
per the report, total number of road accidents, fatalities and injuries
occurred on National Highways (NHs) of Kerala State from calendar
year 2019 to 2023 are as under: -
