Shri Selvaganapathi T.M.: Will the Minister of Finance be pleased to state: (a) whether it is a fact that the Government has sold gold amounting to approximately $ 12 billion to shield foreign currency reserves from the impact of conflict in West Asia; (b) if so, the details thereof; (c) whether it is also a fact that the physical stock of gold remains unchanged at 880.52 tonne, if so, the details thereof; and (d) whether it is also true that there were reports in a section of the press and media about the sale of gold by the Reserve Bank of India and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FINANCE (SHRI PANKAJ CHAUDHARY) (a), (b) and (d) No, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as the custodian of the country’s foreign exchange reserves, has clarified vide the press release dated June 03, 2026 that it has not sold any gold. The Press Release also clarified that section of the press and media reports about the sale of gold were incorrect (the press release can be seen at https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS). (c) As of May 29, 2026, the physical stock of gold held as part of foreign exchange reserves by the RBI remains unchanged at 880.52 tonnes. *****
