Parliament Question: Shifting of the Railway Goods Yard from Jorhat Town

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 4137 TO BE ANSWERED ON 12.08.2026 SHIFTING OF THE RAILWAY GOODS YARD FROM JORHAT TOWN 4137. SHRI KAMAKHYA PRASAD TASA: Will the Minister of RAILWAYS be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government is aware that the Railway Goods Yard is situated in the heart of Jorhat city, loading & unloading of goods is carried out daily by a minimum of 500 trucks, resulting in major traffic disruption and causing significant inconvenience to commuters in the area and if so, the details thereof; (b) the details of the measures taken/being taken by the Government in this regard; (c) whether the Government is also aware that due the location of the said Yard in Jorhat town, the students of Jorhat Engineering College and Government employees are unable to reach their destination on time and if so, the details thereof; and (d) whether the Government has any plan to relocate/shift the said Yard to another place in Jorhat town in the near future and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER MINISTER OF RAILWAYS, INFORMATION & BROADCASTING AND ELECTRONICS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SHRI ASHWINI VAISHNAW) (a) to (d) : The Railway has already initiated measures to address the congestion at Jorhat Town Goods Yard (JTTN). A separate siding of Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been commissioned at nearby Cinnamara station in 2022 and the FCI rakes that were earlier handled at Jorhat Town Goods Yard, are now being handled at Cinnamara. § Page 1 of 2Further, work of development of a goods siding for providing loading/unloading facility at Titabar Station (which is around 22 kms from Jorhat) has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹15.16 Cr. On completion, the facility will enable JTTN- bound goods traffic to be dealt with at Titabar, thereby further decongesting Jorhat Town Goods Yard and improving operational efficiency. ***** Page 2 of 2
