Parliament Question: Smart Cities Mission in West Bengal

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1893 TO BE ANSWERED ON JULY 30, 2026 SMART CITIES MISSION IN WEST BENGAL NO. 1893 SHRI ADHIKARI DEEPAK DEV: SHRI SAUMITRA KHAN: Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) the present status of Smart Cities Mission (SCM) in West Bengal, project-wise; (b) the details of the funds sanctioned, allocated and utilised under various projects of SCM in West Bengal during the last five years, year, city and item-wise; (c) whether the Government has achieved its targets under SCM in West Bengal, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; and (d) whether the Government has reviewed the quality of work carried out under various projects under SCM in cities of West Bengal, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI TOKHAN SAHU) (a) to (c): In the State of West Bengal, New Town Kolkata (NTK) city was selected under Smart Cities Mission (SCM). NTKcity has been able to claim its entire Central Financial Assistance of ₹490 Crore, out of which ₹487 Crore (99%) has been utilized. As reported by the State as on 31.03.2026, total 226 projects worth ₹1,460 Cr were taken up under the Mission, out of which 225 projects (99%) worth ₹1,435 Cr have been completed. The status of projects taken by the city is at Annexure. …2/--2- (d): Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has a multi-level review structure to expedite the progress of projects under the SCM. At the National level, implementation is monitored by an Apex Committee headed by Secretary, MoHUA. At the State level, Mission implementation is monitored by the State level High Powered Steering Committee (HPSC) chaired by the Chief Secretary.
