GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS (DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS) RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO- 1598 ANSWERED ON- 12/02/2026 SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE IN BELAGAVI
1598. SHRI IRANNA KADADI
Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state :-
(a) the status of sports infrastructure available in Belagavi district;
(b) the details of proposals received from the State Government for construction of a multipurpose indoor stadium or sports complex in the city under the Khelo India scheme;
(c) the measures taken to upgrade the existing stadiums and playgrounds in the district;
(d) the status of development of wrestling akharas and swimming pools; and
(e) Government's plan to set up a sports science centre in the region? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS (DR. MANSUKH MANDAVIYA)
(a) to (e) ‘Sports’ being a State subject, the responsibility of development of sports, including upgradation of the existing sports infrastructure, stadiums and playgrounds, development of wrestling akharas and swimming pool and setting up of sports science centre, rests primarily with the respective State/Union Territory Governments. The Union Government only supplements their efforts by bridging critical gaps. However, Khelo India Scheme and National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), implemented by this Ministry, under which financial assistance for development of sports infrastructure is provided are demand-driven schemes. The receipt of proposals under the schemes of this Ministry is a continual process. The proposals received from the State/ UT Government and other eligible entities, including for strengthening sports facilities and or upgradation of sports infrastructure in the State, are considered for financial support, subject to their completeness, technical feasibility and availability of funds under the scheme.
The details of the sports infrastructure projects approved and their sanctioned cost and funds released under the Khelo India Scheme and NSDF, across the country, including in the State of Karnataka, are available in the public domain on the dashboard of the Ministry at
