Status of afforestation
1504. SHRI NEERAJ SHEKHAR:
Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to state:
(a) the details of funds allocated and utilized for afforestation in the country during the last three
years and the current year, State-wise; and
(b) the details of States which have witnessed decreasing and increasing trends in forest cover
during the period, State-wise and year-wise?

(a) The Ministry is undertaking afforestation and reforestation work through ongoing schemes such
as the National Mission for a Green India (GIM), Nagar Van Yojana (NVY), and the Mangrove
Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes (MISHTI), among others. The Ministry also
promotes mass plantation drives on occasions such as International Day of Forests, World
Environment Day, Van Mahotsav, Wildlife Week, etc., and raises awareness through campaigns. The
‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, launched on 5th June 2024, encourages citizens to plant trees in
honour of one’s mother. The State wise fund released and utilized during the last five years is given
in Annexure-1.
(b) Periodic assessment of forest resources of the country based on robust scientific methodologies
is a pre-requisite for monitoring of these resources and better planning for the forestry sector. Forest
Survey of India, an organization under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, is
mandated to carry out a regular assessment of forest resources of the country using satellite data and
field based information and publish the results in a biennial report named as India state of Forest
Report (ISFR). The State/UT-wise details of forest cover and changes, between reporting period of
2021 and 2023 as per India State of Forest Report 2023 is given in Annexure-2.
