Parliament Question: Status of power plants

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA DEPARTMENT OF ATOMIC ENERGY RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO-2242 ANSWERED ON 12/03/2026 STATUS OF POWER PLANTS 2242. SHRI C. VE. SHANMUGAM Will the PRIME MINISTER be pleased to state:- (a) the number of nuclear power plants operational in the country and total capacity thereof; (b) the details of projects which are under various stages of construction; (c) whether it is a fact that the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant has not been made fully operational; (d) if so, the details thereof; (e) the likely date by which all the six units/reactors of the plant would become operational; and (f) the action taken by Government to complete the project early? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (DR. JITENDRA SINGH) (a) At present there are 24 nuclear power plants (excluding RAPS-1 – 100 MW, which is under prolonged shutdown) operational in the country with total installed capacity of 8,780 MW. (b) At present, there are 18 nuclear power reactors with a total capacity of 13600 MW under implementation, comprising of 10 nuclear reactors under construction and 8 reactors under pre-project activities. Government has accorded approval to carry out pre-project activities for 2 x 500 MWe twin unit of FBR 1&2 project at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. On attaining first criticality of PFBR, Government will be approached for financial sanction of FBR 1&2 projects. (c) to (e) The Kudankulam project comprises of six units of 1000 MW LWRs each, being set up in technical cooperation with the Russian Federation. At present, Units 1&2 (KKNPP 1&2 - 2 X 1000 MW) are already in operation, having been commissioned in the years 2014 & 2017 respectively. The remaining four units of 1000 MW each – KKNPP 3&4 (2X1000 MW) and KKNPP 5&6(2X1000 MW) are under various stages of construction. (f) The measures taken include, constant monitoring of progress of project activities at multiple levels, timely identification of constraints & making necessary mid-course corrections, frequent meetings with vendors/ contractors, re-sequencing of construction activities to the extent possible etc. to ensure completion of activities expeditiously and complete the project at the earliest. *****
