GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1479 ANSWERED ON 12/02/2026 STRENGTHEING RADAR INFRASTRUCTURE IN KERALA 1479. SHRI A. A. RAHIM: Will the Minister of EARTH SCIENCES be pleased to state: (a) the number of weather radars installed across the country under Mission Mausam, State- wise; (b) the number of modern Doppler Weather Radars installed in Kerala since 2020 and their locations and dates of commissioning; (c) whether the Ministry has identified any gaps in radar coverage for improving forecasting accuracy in ecologically sensitive areas, such as Idukki and Wayanad districts; (d) if so, the specific steps taken to install additional modern Doppler Weather Radars or equivalent advanced observation systems in such areas; and (e) the steps taken for strengthening radar infrastructure in the State to enhance real-time weather monitoring, early warning systems and disaster preparedness? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND EARTH SCIENCES (DR. JITENDRA SINGH) (a) Currently, 48 Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) are in operation across India, including one X-Band DWR commissioned at Jorhat, Assam, on 19.01.2026. The number of weather radars installed across the country till date is given in Annexure -I. (b) Currently, two Doppler Weather Radars are operational in the State of Kerala; one S-Band DWR at IMD, Kochi, commissioned in July 2017 and upgraded in 2025, and a C-Band DWR at ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram, commissioned in August 2016. (c) & (d) At present, most of the areas of the State of Kerala is covered by the Radar Network, including the S-Band DWR at IMD Kochi, the C-Band DWR at ISRO Thiruvananthapuram, and the newly installed C-Band DWR at IMD Mangalore. However, there are some gaps in the radar coverage of the current network of DWRs mainly over the coastal and hilly regions of Kerala, including Wayanad and Idukki. Additionally, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) launched Mission Mausam with the goal of making India a "Weather-ready and Climate-smart" nation, aiming to mitigate the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events. (e) The S-Band DWR at Kochi was upgraded in 2025 to enhance forecasting capability, which is highly useful for both monsoonal heavy rainfall warning and cyclone tracking for coastal districts. The location for the installation of a new DWR in Wayanad has also been identified.Annexure-I List of 48 Doppler Weather Radars installed so far in the country. S. No. State Location 1.
