GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF JAL SHAKTI DEPARTMENT OF DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2636# ANSWERED ON 16/03/2026 SUCCESS OF JJM IN UTTAR PRADESH 2636# Shri Baburam Nishad: Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state: (a) whether it is a fact that due to the effective implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), pure drinking water has been made available to rural families in the State of Uttar Pradesh and across the country on a large scale for the first time; (b) increase marked in the number of household tap connections in the State from the year 2019 till date; and (c) whether the State of Uttar Pradesh is among the leading States with successful implementation of the JJM? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI (SHRI V. SOMANNA) (a) & (b) Government of India is committed to make provision for safe & potable tap water supply in adequate quantity (55 lpcd), of prescribed quality and on a regular & long-term basis to all rural households in the country. Towards this end, the Government of India launched the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), to be implemented in partnership with States/ UTs in August 2019. Drinking Water is a state subject, and hence, the responsibility of planning, approval, implementation, operation, and maintenance of drinking water supply schemes, including those under JJM, lies with State/UT Governments. The Government of India supports the States/UTs by providing technical and financial assistance. At the time of announcement of Jal Jeevan Mission in the country, 3.23 Crore rural households were reported to have tap water connections. Since then, around 12.58 Crore additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections in the country. Thus, as on 08.03.2026, out of 19.35 Crore rural households in the country, around 15.82 Crore (81.74%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes. The status of coverage of States/ UTs along with State of Uttar Pradesh is available at JJM Dashboard (https://ejalshakti.gov.in/jjmreport/JJMIndia.aspx). (c) As on 08.03.2026, 11 States/ UTs i.e. Goa, A&N Islands, Puducherry, D&NH and D&D, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Telangana, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat have achieved the ‘Har Ghar Jal status, i.e. 100% households are having tap water supply. State Government of Uttar Pradesh has informed that significant progress has been made in the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission by substantially increasing the number of rural households provided with Functional Household Tap Connections of 2.38 crore since 2019 which is highest number across the country. *****
