Parliament Question: Thematic Circuits under SDS 2.0

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF TOURISM LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.4848 ANSWERED ON 23.03.2026 THEMATIC CIRCUITS UNDER SDS 2.0 4848. DR. M K VISHNU PRASAD: Will the Minister of TOURISM be pleased to state: (a) the details of cities selected under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 by the Government; (b) the details of number of thematic circuits completed under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme; (c) whether the Government has included more rural areas in tourism circuits to benefit the poor and grow the tourism sector and if so, the details thereof; and (d) the details of number of rural areas in Tamil Nadu included under the said scheme, particularly in Cuddalore district? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT) (a) to (d): Development of tourism infrastructure at different destinations including cities and rural areas is primarily done by the concerned State Government (SG)/UT Administration (UTA). However, Ministry of Tourism under its various schemes including ‘Swadesh Darshan (SD)’, ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0)’ and ‘Challenge Based Destination Development – CBDD’ (an initiative under Swadesh Darshan scheme) provides financial assistance for development of tourism infrastructure and experiences in the country including in cities and rural areas and on receipt of the project proposals from State Governments/UT Administrations, in synergy with the scheme guidelines, Government directions, availability of funds, inter-se priority etc. Similarly, financial assistance to undertake projects is also provided to SGs/UTAs under ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage AugmentationDrive (PRASHAD)’ scheme with the idea to integrate development of identified pilgrimage and heritage destinations. The above-mentioned schemes are approved till March, 2026. Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned 76 projects under identified thematic circuits in the country as part of Swadesh Darshan scheme for an amount of Rs.5290.33 Crore, out of which 75 are noted as physically complete. Government of India under its ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale’ has also sanctioned 40 projects in 2024-25 in the country including in the state of Tamil Nadu with the primary objective to comprehensively develop iconic tourist centres in the country, branding and marketing them at global scale.
