SHRI MATHESWARAN V S: Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to state: (a) the current estimated population of tigers in the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu; (b) the details of the steps taken by the Government to increase the tiger population; and (c) the details of total number of human casualties along with the compensation paid due to human- elephant conflicts in the Nilgiris District since 2014? ANSWER MINISTER FOR ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE (SHRI BHUPENDER YADAV) (a) to (c): A Statement is laid on the Table of the House. ***STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (A) TO (C) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 316 DUE FOR REPLY ON 10.08.2026 REGARDING TIGER POPULATION IN MUDUMALAI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY ASKED BY SHRI MATHESWARAN V S (a) As per the last All India Tiger Estimation done in the year 2022, the number of unique tigers in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is 114. (b) The steps taken by the Government of India through the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for the conservation and protection of tigers, inter alia, include measures like providing funding assistance to States under the Project Tiger Component of the ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (CSS-IDWH) for habitat protection, infrastructure development, anti-poaching operations, deployment of Tiger Protection Forces (TPF/STPF); strict vigilance & surveillance, intelligence gathering, technological interventions, community involvement through eco-development activities, monitoring through gadgets like camera traps etc.; putting in place security plan, executing security audit besides using patrolling and ecological status revealing application viz. M-STrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers Intensive-Protection & Ecological Status). All these steps result in better protection and conservation of tigers, their prey and habitat which ultimately contribute to increase in their number. (c) As reported by the State, the total human casualties due to human-elephant conflict in the Nilgiris District and the compensation paid are as under:- Sl.
