Parliament Question: Transformation of Fair Price Shops

Shri Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy: Shri Eatala Rajender: Will the Minister of CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD AND PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION be pleased to state: (a) whether the State Government ofTelangana has any proposal for the transformation of Fair Price shops through Installation of CCTV cameras in Fair Price shops and if so, the details thereof (b) whether the State Government has requested for financial assistance amounting to Rs. 24,38,74,500/- for 17, 114 Fair Price shops @ Rs. 14,250/- and also sent concerned project proposals to the Union Government; and (c) if so, the details thereof along with the steps to be taken by the Union Government for said transformation of Fair Price (FP) shops of the State ofTelangana including the time by which the said issue would be resolved? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR MINISTRY OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS. FOOD & PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION (SHRIMATI NIMUBEN JAYANTIBHAI BAMBHANIYA) (a) to (c): The Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) under National Food Security Act (NFS A), 2013 is operated under the joint responsibility of the Central and the State/Union Territory (UT) Governments. Central Government is responsible for procurement, allocation and transportation of foodgrains upto the designated depots of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), whereas the operational responsibilities for allocation of foodgrains within the States/ UTs, identification of eligible beneficiaries, issuance of ration cards, distribution of foodgrains to eligible beneficiaries under TPDS, issuance of license to Fair Price Shop dealers, supervision over and monitoring of functioning ofFPSs etc. rest with the concerned State/UT Governments. The Union Government received a proposal from the Government of Telangana in March 2025 seeking financial assistance for the transformation of Fair Price Shops (FPSs) in the State through the installation of CCTV cameras. In this regard, the Government of Telangana was informed, vide letter dated 17.07.2025, that there is currently no such scheme under the Union Government to provide financial assistance to State Governments for the installation of CCTV cameras in Fair Price Shops.
