Will the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution be pleased to state
(a) : whether the Food Corporation of India (FCI) lost about 50,000 tonnes offoodgrains during transit between AprilโDecember Financial Year 2025-26, the resulting monetary loss to the exchequer;
(b): the details of such transit losses, including losses attributed to spillage, theft, poor infrastructure and handling deficiencies, State-wise and route-wise;
(C): whether transit losses stood at 73,000 tonnes in Financial Year 2024-25 ;
(d): how many beneficiary families under NFS A could have been fed with the quantity lost; and
(e) : whether any accountability has been fixed in cases of abnormal losses and the details thereoP ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR MINISTRY OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD & PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION (SHRIMATI NIMUBEN JAYANTIBHAI BAMBHANIYA)
(a): The Food Corporation of India (FCI) dispatched around 306.35 LMT of foodgrains from surplus to deficit states between April to December 2025-2026. During this movement, 50,454 MT of foodgrains (0.16% of the total quantity) was lost in transit, amounting to a monetary loss of ?178.03 crore.
(b) The State-wise details on the Transit Losses (Wheat+Rice) reported during April to December 2025 including losses attributed to spillage, theft, poor infrastructure and
handling deficiencies are as under:(Operational Figures. (c): There is a transit loss of 73,047.94 MT of foodgrains reported during Financial Year 2024-2025, which is 0.17% of the total dispatched quantity of 423.83 LMT.
(d): Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, households covered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) receive 35 kg of foodgrains per household per month, while Priority households (PHH) are entitled to 5 kg offoodgrains per person per month.
(e): Each case of transit loss is investigated and based on the merits of the cases, losses are categorized as justified or unjustified. Accordingly, the recoveries are effected or disciplinary action is taken wherever necessary. During the period from 01.04.2025 to 31.12.2025, a total of 38 disciplinary cases have been initiated against the officers/officials of FCI in connection with the transit losses 88888
