GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3050 TO BE ANSWERED ON AUGUST 06, 2026 ULBS COVERED UNDER SBM-U 2.0 IN THANJAVUR NO. 3050 SHRI MURASOLI S: Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) the number of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Thanjavur district covered under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 during the last five years; (b) the funds allocated and released for solid waste management and sewage treatment infrastructure in Thanjavur town during the said period; and (c) whether Thanjavur has been considered for inclusion under the Smart Cities Mission or any other urban development scheme and if so, the details and the current status thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI TOKHAN SAHU) (a) and (b) : Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U) is implemented in urban areas of all States/UTs including Thanjavur district. Further, under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0, launched on 1st October, 2021, Used Water Management (UWM) has been added as a new component to holistically deal with faecal sludge and septage in cities having less than 1 lakh population. Hence, sewage treatment infrastructure for Thanjavur town is not covered under UWM component of SBM-U 2.0. …2/--2- The Government of India has allocated ₹807.40 Cr under Solid Waste Management (SWM) component to the State of Tamil Nadu against which proposals having a Central share of ₹806.60 Cr have been approved, out of which an amount of Rs. 265.66 Cr. has been released to the State of Tamil Nadu including Thanjavur. Sewage treatment infrastructure for Thanjavur town is addressed under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), launched on 25th June, 2015, and AMRUT 2.0, launched on 1st October, 2021, with the objective of making cities 'self-reliant' and 'water secure'. Under AMRUT, the State had taken up 01 sewerage and septage management project worth ₹67.8 Cr in the Kumbakonam ULB in Thanjavur district. Under AMRUT 2.0, the State has not taken any project in Thanjavur District in the sewerage and septage management sector. An amount of ₹4547.68 Cr has been released for the projects under AMRUT/ AMRUT 2.0 to the State of Tamil Nadu including Thanjavur district during the last five years. (c): The Smart Cities Mission (SCM), launched on 25 June 2015, was implemented up to 31 March 2025, covering 100 selected cities identified through a Challenge/Competition process, Thanjavur was among the cities selected under the Mission. Under SCM, a total of 103 projects amounting to ₹ 996 Cr were taken up in Thanjavur City, out of which 102 projects amounting to ₹ 989 Cr have been completed. The Thanjavur smart city has been able to claim Central financial assistance of Rs. 490 Cr. As reported by the city as on 31.03.2026, 488 Cr has been utilised. In 24 ULBs of Thanjavur district, the State of Tamil Nadu has taken up 47 projects worth ₹90.59 Cr under AMRUT 2.0 in the sectors of water supply, water body rejuvenations and development of parks. Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-U 2.0, in Thanjavur District, 13,424 houses have been sanctioned, with 12,763 grounded and 12,205 completed. *****
