Executive Summary & Key Takeaways

**Summary:** In response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2052, addressed on July 31, 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways provided information regarding the upgradation of State Highways (SHs) to National Highways (NHs) in Karnataka. Over the past five years, a total of 8 state roads, encompassing 836 km, have been declared as National Highways in Karnataka. However, no state road in the Chamarajanagar district was upgraded to a National Highway during this period. The Ministry stated that it receives proposals from State Governments/Union Territories, including Karnataka, for the declaration/upgradation of state roads to National Highways. These proposals are considered based on connectivity needs, inter-se priority, traffic levels, and synergy with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP). Currently, there are 93 ongoing works on various National Highways in Karnataka, at different stages of implementation, reflecting the continuous nature of NH development and maintenance. The response was provided by the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari.
