The Gujarat Government Gazette, Extraordinary, published by authority on Thursday, November 6, 2025, contains a notification from the Ports and Transport Department regarding an amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The notification, No. G/PT/2025/26/PTD/MRT/e-file/22/2023/1291/KH-PF2, amends the Government Notification No: PT/2019/12/MVD/102014/165/KH, dated the 12th September, 2019. The amendment concerns penalties for driving a transport vehicle carrying more passengers than authorized in the registration certificate.
The amendment introduces a new entry, "24A", in the schedule. Officers of the Motor Vehicle Department of and above the rank of Assistant Inspector of Motor Vehicles on checking duty, and officers of the police department of and above the rank of Head Constable of Police in all cities and municipal towns when performing traffic regulation duty, are empowered to enforce this rule. Section 194A addresses the offence. The penalty for a first offence is ₹200 per excess passenger.
