Posted On: 31 AUG 2026 4:10PM by PIB Delhi The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu graced the combined convocation ceremony of 18 National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Campuses in New Delhi today (August 31, 2026).

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the textile and apparel sector is not just a part of our cultural heritage, but it has also been the backbone of the livelihoods of millions of people. If the traditional artisans receive the support and guidance, it will encourage their next generations to remain engaged in this profession with pride and confidence. She was happy to note that various NIFT centres have implemented programmes like the 'Craft Cluster Initiative' to acquaint weavers and artisans in their respective regions with modern techniques in the textile and apparel sector and to connect them with markets.The President said that today, our country is expanding its role on the global stage with far greater confidence than ever before. Fashion Technology is also a field with immense potential to enhance India’s global footprint. She urged graduating students to seize this opportunity. She said that in this endeavour, students should maintain a global outlook while remaining firmly connected to their roots and the core values of our culture. By doing so, they will not only become successful professionals but also contribute to the preservation and enrichment of India’s cultural heritage.

The President said that students should create world-class products and brands, but they should also ensure that these are eco-friendly. She stated that the use of locally available raw materials for their products will be a significant step towards environmental conservation. Remnants should not be discarded as waste; they can be given a new form, new utility, and new value. She was happy to note that NIFT’s policymakers have accorded significant importance to sustainability and social responsibility within theinstitute's strategic plan. She expressed confidence that NIFT will take effective steps to make circular economy practices widespread and beneficial, aligned with its efforts toward a sustainable future in the textile and apparel sector.

The President said that the youth will play a pivotal role in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by the year

2047. She underlined that the nation has high expectations from talented young students of prestigious institutes like NIFT. She urged them to contribute to building a society where every citizen has a fair opportunity to participate in the nation's progress. She said that their success lies in their efforts to help artisans enhance their productivity and income while preserving the authentic identity of their craft.
