Executive Summary
Issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on August 14, 2026, this corrigendum amends notification G.S.R 712(E) regarding motor vehicle width measurements. It clarifies that specific safety devices, sensors for advanced driver assistance systems, and body protections are excluded from the calculation of a vehicle's overall width. These devices must still adhere to prescribed dimensional standards where applicable.
Key Points / Main Content
Amendments to Measurement Rules
The document substitutes sub-clause (i) of clause (B) in sub-rule (1) of rule 93 of the Motor Vehicle Rules.
It establishes a definitive list of components that shall not be taken into consideration when measuring the overall width of a motor vehicle.
Excluded Components and Devices
Vision and Signaling: Rear-view mirrors, devices for indirect vision, and direction indicators.
Body Protection: Guard rails and rub-rails (rubber beading) with a maximum thickness of 20 mm on each side of the body or side footstep.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): Sensors and their casings used for systems such as Blind Spot Information Systems and Moving Off Information Systems.
Specialized Vehicle Equipment: Systems fitted on tippers and dumpers designed to enclose the load body as per the second proviso to rule 138B.
Compliance Standards
Despite being excluded from width measurements, all listed devices must remain within prescribed dimensions if specific standards are established for them.
Impact Analysis
Vehicle Manufacturers (OEMs)Impact
Manufacturers gain technical flexibility to integrate advanced safety sensors and driver assistance systems without these components causing the vehicle to exceed legal width limits.
Action Required
Ensure that external attachments like rub-rails do not exceed the 20mm thickness threshold and verify that all ADAS sensor casings comply with relevant dimensional standards.
Testing and Regulatory AuthoritiesImpact
Certification and inspection bodies receive updated criteria for measuring vehicle dimensions, ensuring a standardized approach to vehicle type approval.
Action Required
Update inspection protocols and measurement procedures to exclude the specified items (mirrors, ADAS sensors, and load body enclosures) during compliance testing.
Operators of Tippers and DumpersImpact
This clarification ensures that mandatory or voluntary load-body enclosure systems do not lead to technical non-compliance regarding vehicle width.
Action Required
Confirm that any installed enclosure systems are fitted in accordance with the provisions of rule 138B to qualify for the measurement exclusion.
Key Entities Referenced
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways: The primary government body responsible for the regulation of motor vehicle standards and the issuance of these rules.
Rule 93: The specific regulatory provision being corrected to clarify that certain safety sensors and devices are excluded from a motor vehicle's overall width measurement.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): A category of safety technologies, including sensors for blind spot and moving off information, whose components are exempted from width calculations.
Rule 138B: A referenced regulation concerning systems used on tippers and dumpers to enclose the load body, which are also considered in vehicle width measurement exemptions.
