Regarding need for additional train services and upgradation
of railway infrastructure at Salem Junction Railway Station in
Tamil Nadu-Laid
SHRI T. M. SELVAGANAPATHI (SALEM): Salem is an important
division of Southern Railway and this division itself was created
owing to the need of Salem and the jurisdiction under it as it was
having many eligibility criteria. However, the Salem junction which
is the headquarter of Salem division does not have the proper
infrastructure yet, resulting in difficulties to thousands of
passengers coming to this junction for boarding or deboarding the
trains. The population of Salem and its surrounding areas has
increased manifold, requiring new trains to commence from Salem
to many places, and it can be possible only if a pitline is
established of required capacity. Salem junction requires many
more infrastructures like creation of new platforms, expansion of
ticket booking facilities and other passenger amenities such as
escalators, drinking water facilities, etc. in addition to expansion of
parking facilities in and around the junction. I urge upon the
Minister of Railways to look into these issues and take immediate
action to ensure that Salem Division gets its due share of
development. By doing so, not only passengers get relief, but also
the Railways will be benefited from the angle of revenue earning
and creation of assets in the larger interest of passengers.
