Regarding need for comprehensive measures to address the problems of sea erosion along costal stretches of Dakshina Kannada district, particularly Ullal-Someshwara belt in Karnataka-Laid CAPTAIN BRIJESH CHOWTA (DAKSHINA KANNADA): I seek to raise the urgent matter of recurring sea erosion along vulnerable coastal stretches of Dakshina Kannada district, particularly the Ullal?Someshwara belt. Out of the district?s 36.66 km coastline, nearly 17.74 km, or 48.4 per cent, is classified as eroding, which is significantly higher than the State average of 24 per cent and National Average of 33.6 per cent. Only about 21.9 per cent of Dakshina Kannada?s coastline is stable, which is much lower than the neighbouring districts. Repeated monsoon wave action, shifting coastal patterns, climate variability, and certain unplanned interventions have led to shoreline retreat, damaging houses, roads, and public infrastructure, while endangering the livelihoods of traditional fishing communities. With the southwest monsoon imminent, immediate preventive measures are necessary. In this context, I urge the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in coordination with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, to consider a comprehensive district-level coastal protection plan and allocate dedicated financial support for urgent mitigation works.
