Regarding Need to expedite completion of the Chennai Port -
Maduravoyal Expressway Project in Tamil Nadu-Laid

(CHENNAI SOUTH): The National Highways Authority of India
(NHAI) is developing the Chennai Port? Maduravoyal Expressway
in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of Rs. 5,570 crores. It
is an elevated freeway six-lane and 20.6 kilometres long. The
corridor starts from Chennai Port Gate No.10 and runs along the
bank of the Cooum River to Maduravoyal until it reaches
Koyambedu. Work on Maduravoyal Elevated Expressway project,
which was stuck for a longtime, has finally begun. The construction
of the double-decker elevated corridor between Maduravoyal and
Chennai Port is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2027,
originally targeted for completion by May 2026, the project has
faced delays due to factors such as monsoon-rains. The
Bharatmala Pariyojana is divided into four packages and is being
implemented in the Engineering, Procurement and Construction
(EPC) mode. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is
executing the work in four phases. Funds allocated include Rs.
1,388.59 crore for Phase 1 (4.95 km), Rs.1,616.97 crore for Phase
2 (5.10 km), Rs. 1,299.36 crore for Phase 3 (4.49 km), and Rs.
1,205.40 crore for Phase 4 (6.41 km). The Government of Tamil
Nadu is extending its full support and cooperation through land
acquisition and other approvals. Once operational, the corridor is
expected to reduce city traffic significantly and improve cargo
movement to and from the port. When completed, the expressway
is expected to have a design capacity to handle 40,000 passenger
cars per day. This will greatly improve transportation and
connectivity in the region, and is expected to reduce congestion
and travel time for commuters. Therefore, I urge the Union
Government to expedite the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal
Expressway to ease the Chennai City Traffic and improve cargo
movement to and from the Chennai Port.
