Regarding need to put in place effective measures and infrastructure to address increasing cases of chronic kidney disease and other health conditions under AB-PMJAY-Laid DR. BYREDDY SHABARI (NANDYAL): I wish to raise a matter of urgent public importance regarding the rapidly increasing burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in India. An estimated 138 million people are affected, with prevalence rising significantly in recent years. Rural populations are disproportionately impacted due to limited screening and delayed access to care. Alarmingly, nearly half of patients are diagnosed only at Stage V, when kidney failure has already occurred, necessitating dialysis. Under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, screening is largely limited to blood pressure and blood sugar, while essential kidney function tests such as Serum Creatinine and Urine ACR are not routinely included. This leads to missed early diagnoses. Further, CKD of Unknown Etiology (CKDu) has emerged in clusters such as Uddanam in Andhra Pradesh, affecting agricultural and heat-exposed workers. Dialysis services have expanded under PMNDP, yet quality gaps and limited promotion of Peritoneal Dialysis persist. Paediatric nephrology and transplant capacity in public hospitals also remain inadequate. I urge the Government to strengthen early screening, hotspot mapping, dialysis quality standards, paediatric services, and public-sector transplant infrastructure under AB-PMJAY.
