Regarding Need to set up Dark Sky Reserves in Rajasthan and formulate national framework for establishment and governance of Dark Sky Reserves in the country-Laid SHRI P. P. CHAUDHARY (PALI): I wish to draw the attention of the Government towards the need of establishing Dark Sky Reserves in Rajasthan. The desert regions of Rajasthan have immense potential to host Dark Sky Reserves due to natural factors such as low population density, arid climate and minimal atmospheric interference. Facilities such as the Astroport at Sariska and Mount Abu Observatory already serve as important centres for astronomical research and astro-tourism. The first Dark Sky Reserve of the country was established in Hanle, Ladakh. The Hanle Dark Sky Reserve has since emerged as a hub for astro-tourism and astronomical research, attracting nearly 30,000 tourists annually, promoting sustainable tourism in a remote region. At present, India lacks a comprehensive national framework to govern the establishment and regulation of Dark Sky Reserves. Therefore, I urge the Department of Space to formulate a national framework for the establishment and governance of Dark Sky Reserves in the country, thereby transforming Rajasthan into a hub for astro-tourism. Such a framework would enable the protection and preservation of naturally occurring night skies through regulated lighting norms, while facilitating the establishment of Dark Sky reserves and promoting astronomical research.
