Singh Baghel released the annual publication of ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025’ of Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying on the occasion of National Milk Day on November 26, 2025, at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Minority Affairs Shri George Kurian along with Shri Naresh Pal Gangwar, Secretary Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying and other dignitaries also graced the occasion. Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2025, that was released today is an important publication document that provides comprehensive data on the livestock and dairy sector trends. The BAHS 2025 is based on the outcomes of the Integrated Sample Survey conducted for the period from 1st March 2024 to 29th February 2025. This survey, unique in the country, generates crucial data on the production estimates of Major Livestock Products (MLPs) such as Milk, Eggs, Meat, and Wool, which plays a pivotal role in research and policy formulation in the livestock sector. This publication includes state-wise estimation of production and per-capita availability of MLPs including insights into the estimated number of animals involved in milk production, poultry egg- laying birds, animals slaughtered, and sheep shorn. Further, it presents valuable data on veterinary hospitals, polyclinics, gaushalas, state farms, and other infrastructure details, along with the number of artificial inseminations performed, and a global perspective on the livestock sector. Together, these surveys form a robust statistical framework that supports data-driven decision making, facilitates performance evaluation of government initiatives, and enables international reporting and comparison, ultimately aiding in the sustainable growth and productivity enhancement of the livestock sector. The details are as follows: Milk, Egg, Meat and Wool Production 2024-25 The BAHS- 2025 releases the estimation of production of Milk, Egg, Meat and wool in the country annually based on the results of Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) which is conducted across the country in three seasons i.e., Summer (March-June), Rainy (July-October) and Winter (November- February). The estimates of milk, egg, meat and wool for the year 2024-25 have been brought out and the outcomes of this survey are summarized below:Milk Production: India Global rank is 1st in milk production. The total Milk production in the country is estimated as 247.87 million tonnes during 2024-25 production has increased from 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24 registering a growth of 3.58% % in 2024-25 over the previous year. The Per Capita Availability has increased from 319 gm/ day in 2014-15 to 485 gm /day in 2024-25. Top 5 Milk producing States are: Uttar Pradesh (15.66%), Rajasthan (14.82%), Madhya Pradesh (9.12%), Gujarat (7.78%), Maharashtra (6.71%). They together contribute 54.09 % of total Milk production in the country. The milk production from exotic/crossbred cattle has increased by 4.97 % and indigenous/nondescript cattle has increased by 3.51% as compared to previous year. The milk production from buffaloes also increased by 2.45 % as compared to previous year. Egg Production: India is 2nd in Egg production globally. The total Egg production in the country is estimated as 149.11 billion nos. during 2024-25 and registered a growth of 4.44 % the production has increased annually by 3.18% during 2023-24. The per capita availability of eggs increased from 62 nos/annum in 2014-15 to 106 nos/annum in 2024-25. The major contribution in the total Egg production comes from Andhra Pradesh with a share of (18.37 %) of total Egg production followed by Tamil Nadu (15.63 %), Telangana (12.98%), West Bengal (10.72%) and Karnataka (6.67 %). Collectively, these states contribute 64.37% of India’s total egg production, underscoring their crucial role in the country’s poultry sector. Out of the total eggs produced, commercial poultry contributed 125.98 billion eggs, accounting for 84.49%of the national output. Backyard poultry, on the other hand, produced 23.13 billion eggs, representing 15.51% of the total production.Meat Production: India’s global rank in meat production is 4th. The total Meat production in the country is estimated as 10.50 million tonnes during 2024-25 and registered a growth of 2.46 % the production was increased over 2023-24. The meat production from poultry is 5.18 million tonnes, contributing about half of total meat production. The top five meat producing States are West Bengal (12.46%), Uttar Pradesh (12.20%), Maharashtra (11.57%), Andhra Pradesh (10.84%) and Telangana (10.49%). They together contribute 57.55% of total meat production in the country. Wool Production: The total Wool production in the country is estimated as 34.57million kg during 2024-25 registered notable increase growth of 2.63 % over last year. The Major contribution in the total Wool production comes from Rajasthan with a share of 47.85% followed by Jammu & Kashmir (22.88%), Gujarat (6.22%), Maharashtra (4.75%) and Himachal Pradesh (4.30%).
