A four-day State-level training programme on ICD-10 Mortality Coding commenced at AIIMS
Nagpur on Monday with the objective of strengthening cause-of-death (COD) data systems
across Maharashtra.
The training, being held from May 5 to 8, is organized by the State Bureau of Health Intelligence
and Vital Statistics (SBHIVS), Government of Maharashtra, in collaboration with the Tata
Memorial Centre (TMC) and the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, AIIMS Nagpur.
The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director &
CEO, AIIMS Nagpur. Other dignitaries present included Dr. Rajesh Dikshit, Dr. Manish
Shrigiriwar, Dr. Yagnik Vaza, Dr. Sunil Chidrawar, Dr. Sharvari Mhapankar, and Dr. Saman
Gamage.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Joshi emphasized the need for institutional collaboration and
expanding such training programmes across Maharashtra to strengthen Medical Certification of
Cause of Death (MCCD) practices and improve mortality statistics through accurate ICD coding.
Welcoming the participants, Dr. Shrigiriwar, Dr. Vaza, and Dr. Mhapankar highlighted the
importance of capacity building in mortality data systems. Dr. Dikshit spoke about the role of
ICD coding in strengthening public health statistics, while Dr. Rohina Joshi stressed the
importance of improving MCCD practices across the state.
The training programme focuses on ICD-10 coding and MCCD practices, including legal
frameworks, CRVS systems, coding guidelines, and hands-on digital exercises. Sessions are
being led by Dr. Saman Gamage, an international expert in ICD coding.Organizers said the Training of Trainers (ToT) model is expected to help improve the quality and
accuracy of cause-of-death data across Maharashtra. The programme will conclude on May 8
with participant assessments and certification.
