Executive Summary & Key Takeaways

**Summary:** This policy update, issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on August 25, 2021, expands the scope of permitted devices for card tokenization. The original circular DPSS.CO.PD No.1463/02.14.003/2018-19, dated January 08, 2019, initially allowed card tokenization services only for mobile phones and tablets. This revision now includes consumer devices such as laptops, desktops, wearables (wrist watches, bands, etc.), and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The RBI's decision follows a review of the existing framework and stakeholder feedback, aiming to enhance the safety, security, and convenience of card transactions for users. All other provisions outlined in the original circular remain in effect. This directive is issued under Section 10(2) read with Section 18 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 (Act 51 of 2007). For further information, contact P.
