No. SRO B-16/2017.—In exercise of the powers conferred by Sections 8 and 10 of the Tamil Nadu District Police
Act, 1859 (Central Act XXIV of 1859) and Sections 9 and 11 of the Chennai City Police Act, 1888 (Tamil Nadu
Act III of 1888) read with the proviso to Article 309 of the Constitution of India, the Governor of Tamil Nadu,
herebymakes the following amendments to the Special Rules for the Tamil Nadu Police Subordinate Service
(Section 34 in Volume III of the Tamil Nadu Services Manual):-
AMENDMENTS
In the said Special Rules, in Annexure -II, in the tabular column, under Class 1;-
(1) for the entries “Category 2 Sub-Inspectors of Police” and ”Category-2A-Sub Inspector of Police (Finger Print)
(Men and Women)” in column (1) and the corresponding entries in columns (2) and (3) thereof, the following entries
shall, respectively, be substituted, namely:-
“Category 2 Sub- Inspectors Must have completed the age (1) (i) Must possess a Degree from any
of Police of 20 years and must not have Univerisity or Institution recognized

(4) (i) In respect of male candidates, the height

(iii) In respect of male candidates, the chest
measurement round the chest shall not be
less than 81 centimetres on normal condition
(on expiration) and shall not be less than
86 centimetres on full inspiration, with a
minimum chest expansionof 5 centimetres:
Provided that the Ex- Servicemen and
Ex- Personnel of Central Paramilitary Forces
and the departmental quota candidates are
exempted from height and chest

Provided further that there shall be no chest
measurement for female candidates.
(5) (i) Every male candidate shall undergo a Physical
Endurance Test, that is, running 1500 meters
in 7 minutes.
(ii) Every Ex-Servicemen and Ex-Personnel of
Central Paramilitary Forces shall undergo a
Physical Endurance Test, that is, running
1500 metres in 8 minutes.
(iii) Every Women candidate shall undergo a
Physical Endurance Test, that is,
running 400 meters in 150 seconds. i.e. two
and half minute.
(6) The candidates who qualify in the Physical
Endurance Test shall undergo the Physical
Efficiency Test as specified below:
Provided that departmental quota candidates
are exempted from the Physical Efficiency Test.

3. FOR EX-SERVICEMEN AND EX-PERSONNEL OF CENTRAL PARAMILITARY FORCES

Out of the above five events, every candidate shall participate in three events, namely, one jump event, one running
event and the shot put event and shall qualify in all the three events with minimum of one star standard in each of the
events.
(7) The number of candidates to be called for
Viva-voce in each category shall be as follows:-
(i) Open Ouota:- From out of the candidates qualified
in the Physical Efficiency Test, only two times
of the number of notified vacancies in
each of the categories such as Open
Competition, Backward Classes, Backward
Classes (Muslims), Most Backward Classes,
Schedule Castes including Arunthathiyar,
Schedule Tribes and Women shall be
permitted to viva-voce, based on the marks
obtained in the Written Test and the Physical
Efficiency Test.
(ii) Departmental Ouota:- From out of the candidates
qualified In the Physical Endurance Test, only
two times of the number of notified vacancies
in each of the categories such as Open
Competition, Backward Classes, Backward
Classes (Muslims), Most Backward
Classes, Schedule Castes including
Arunthathiyar, Schedule Tribes and Women
shall be permitted to viva-voce, based on the
marks obtained in the Written Test.
(8) (i) The Scheme of Written Test and the distribution
of marks in the recruitment process shall be

(i) Written Test 70 marks
(a) General Knowledge 40 marks
(b) Logical Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Psychology Test,
Communication Skills and Information Handling Ability. 30 marks

(140 x ½ Mark = 70 Marks)]
The duration of the Written Test will be 2½ hours.
(ii) Physical Efficiency Test 15 marks
(iii) Special Marks 05 marks

2. DEPARTMENTAL QUOTA
(i) Written Test 85 marks

Explanation.-
(i) Service rendered as Sub-Inspector of Police

the 1st July of the year of selection.

(b)in item (3), after sub-item (ii) the following sub-item shall be added, namely:-

Schedule Tribes and Women shall be permitted to viva-voce, based on the marks obtained in the Written
Test”.
(3). in column (3), against the entries “Category 8 Constables (Men and Women) (Other than Band Constables Office
of the Director General of Police) and Constables (Armed Reserve)” in column (1), in item (1), for
sub-item (iii), the following sub-item shall be substituted, namely:-
“(iii) All the candidates should appear for the Written Test first. From out of the candidates qualified in the Written
Test, only five times of the number of notified vacancies in each of the categories such as Open Competition, Backward
Classes, Backward Classes (Muslims), Most Backward Classes, Schedule Castes including Arunthathiyar, Schedule Tribes
and Women shall be permitted for the next stage of selection, based on the marks obtained in the Written Test.”
