Act 1975 (Amendment) Order 2026

The King's Most Excellent Majesty in Council
In accordance with section 1B of the Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1975(1), a draft of this Order
was laid before and approved by a resolution of each House of Parliament.
Accordingly, His Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 1B of that Act, is pleased,
by and with the advice of His Privy Council, to order as follows.
Citation and commencement
1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1975 (Amendment)
Order 2026.
(2) This Order comes into force on the day after the day on which it is made.
Amendment of the Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1975
2.—(1) The Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1975 (“the 1975 Act”) is amended in accordance
with articles 3 to 6.
(2) The amendments made by articles 3 to 5 have effect from the beginning of 1st April 2026.
(3) The amendments made by article 6 have effect for the period of 12 months beginning with
1st April 2026 and each successive period of 12 months.
Ministerial salaries
3.—(1) In section 1(2) (Lord Chancellor’s salary)(2)—
(1) 1975 c. 27. Section 1B was inserted by section 1(2) of the Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1997 (c. 62).

Speakers’ salaries
5. In section 1 (salaries)—
(a) in subsection (3) (speaker of the House of Commons)(5), for “£75,766” substitute
“£82,750”;
(b) in subsection (3A) (speaker of the House of Lords)(6), for “£101,038” substitute
“£110,351”.
Alteration of salaries
6. In section 1A (alteration of salaries), for subsections (1) to (2A) substitute—
“(1) For each period of 12 months beginning with 1st April, the annual amount of any
salary payable under section 1 is to be increased by the relevant percentage.
(2) The relevant percentage is the average percentage by which the mid-points of the
Senior Civil Service pay bands below that of permanent secretary, having effect from 1st
April of the period concerned, have increased compared with the previous 1st April.
(2A) But in relation to the period of 12 months beginning with 1st April 2026, the
relevant percentage is—
(a) the relevant percentage determined in accordance with subsection (2), or
(b) if higher, the average percentage by which the mid-points of the Senior Civil
Service pay bands (including that of permanent secretary), having effect from 1st
April 2026, have increased compared with 1st April 2025.”.
(3) Parts 1 to 4 of Schedule 1 were substituted by S.I. 2011/1689.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order in Council)
This Order changes the annual amount of salaries payable under section 1 of the Ministerial and other
Salaries Act 1975 (“the 1975 Act”) to Ministers, Opposition Leaders and Whips and the Commons
and Lords Speakers. This Order also updates the formula in section 1A of the 1975 Act that provides
for annual alterations of those salaries.
Article 2 provides that the amounts of salaries specified in this Order have effect from the beginning
of 1st April 2026. It also provides that the updated formula in section 1A has effect for the period
of 12 months beginning with 1st April 2026 and each successive period of 12 months (so that the
amounts specified in this Order will be altered for the period beginning with 1st April 2026 and
each successive period).
Articles 3 to 5, and the Schedule, set out the new salaries payable under section 1 of the 1975 Act.
Article 6 updates the formula in section 1B of the 1975 Act so that it refers to the mid-points of the
Senior Civil Service pay bands below that of permanent secretary, subject to a transitional measure
for the period of 12 months beginning with 1st April 2026.
