S T A T U T O R Y I N S T R U M E N T S 2026 No. 596 CIVIL AVIATION The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Jet Formation Display Teams) Regulations 2026 Made - - - - 5th June 2026 Coming into force - - 6th June 2026 The Secretary of State has decided that it is necessary in the public interest to restrict flying in the area specified in regulation 3(1) by reason of the intended holding of flying displays there by jet formation display teams. The Secretary of State makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by article 239 of the Air Navigation Order 2016(a). Citation and commencement 1. These Regulations may be cited as the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Jet Formation Display Teams) Regulations 2026 and they come into force on 6th June 2026. Interpretation 2. In regulation 3(1) the times referred to are Co-ordinated Universal Time(b). Restricted airspace 3.—(1) Subject to paragraph (2), beginning with 0800 hours and ending with 2000 hours at each of the places specified in column 1 and on the corresponding date or dates specified in column 5 of the table in the Schedule no aircraft is to fly— (a) in any of the airspace above the area bounded by a circle having a radius specified in column 4 of the table which is centred at the point specified in column 2 of the table, and (b) below the corresponding altitude or Flight level(c) specified in column 3 of the table. (2) Paragraph (1) does not apply to any aircraft— (a) flying within controlled airspace or within an aerodrome traffic zone in respect of which there is an appropriate air traffic control unit(d) if it is flying in accordance with a clearance or permission of the unit controlling that airspace or aerodrome traffic zone, (b) flying in accordance with a permission issued by the relevant flying display director, or (a) S.I. 2016/765, amended by S.I. 2024/990; there are other amending instruments but none is relevant. (b) Co-ordinated Universal Time (UTC) is one hour behind British Summer Time (BST). (c) The term “Flight level” has the same meaning as defined in Schedule 1 to the Air Navigation Order 2016. (d) The term “air traffic control unit” is defined in Schedule 1 to the Air Navigation Order 2016.(c) insofar as flying is already prohibited by the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Prisons) Regulations 2001(a), the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Prisons and Young Offender Institutions) (England and Wales) Regulations 2023(b), and the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Ministry of Defence Prohibited Places) Regulations 2026(c). (c) S.I. 2026/64. 2EXPLANATORY NOTE (This note is not part of the Regulations) These Regulations impose restrictions on flying in various locations as specified in the Schedule during flying displays by jet formation teams such as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, which are due to take place during the period 29th May to 3rd October 2026, inclusive. In order to protect the display aircraft, other air traffic and spectators, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport agree that flying should be restricted in the vicinity of the airspace within which the display teams will perform for reasons of public safety. These Regulations apply except insofar as flying is already prohibited by the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Prisons) Regulations 2001 (S.I. 2001/1657, amended by S.I. 2007/2377), the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Prisons and Young Offender Institutions) (England and Wales) Regulations 2023 (S.I. 2023/1101), and the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Ministry of Defence Prohibited Places) Regulations 2026 (S.I. 2026/64). The times mentioned in regulation 3(1) are Co-ordinated Universal Time (UTC) which is one hour behind British Summer Time (BST). In relation to the permission mentioned in regulation 3(2)(b), the relevant flying display director may be contacted as notified. Full details of this Statutory Instrument will be promulgated by Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) and Notice to Aviation (NOTAM).
