Goa’s coastline came together in a united effort to protect its beaches and marine environment as the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in association with the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of Goa, Lions International, Vibrant Goa Foundation and other stakeholders, organised the International Coastal Cleanup Day
(ICC) 2026 across 25 beaches in the State today.
Held from 6.30 am to 9.30 am, the clean-up drive saw the participation of more than 3,878 volunteers, including members of Gram Panchayats, the Municipal Corporation, government agencies, NGOs, community organisations and local volunteers. Together, the participants collected around 2,760 kg of plastic and other marine litter from Goa’s beaches.
The campaign was organised under the theme “स्वच्छ सागर, सुरत तट – यही पहचान हमारी” and Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar (SSSS) 5.0, highlighting the importance of keeping the marine environment clean and reducing pollution along the coastline.
The main event was held at Miramar Beach, where Governor of Goa Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju joined the coastal clean-up activities. DIG Manoj Bhatia, TM, Coast Guard District Commander-11, Goa, the Ministry of Earth Sciences Advisor to the Secretary Shri Pavanjeet Singh Sandhu, Dr Alvarinho Luis, Scientist-F, NCPOR;
and Professor S.K. Singh, Director, NIO along with Coast Guard officers and representatives of participating organisations.
Goa state Ministers, MLA and public representatives also joined the campaign at beaches in their respective constituencies. Mauvin Godinho, Minister for Transport, Industries, Panchayat Raj, Protocol and Legislative Affairs; Ramesh Tawadkar,Minister for Art & Culture, Tribal Welfare, and Sports & Youth Affairs; Venzy Viegas, MLA, Benaulim, Antonio Vas, MLA, Cortalim; Sankalp Amonkar, MLA, Mormugao;
among other dignitaries and stakeholders, participated in the drive.
The participation of local communities, government agencies, volunteers and organisations across the State underlined the importance of collective action in protecting Goa’s coastline, which is central to the State’s environment, tourism and coastal livelihoods.
The initiative also reinforced the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, encouraging citizens to adopt responsible practices and prevent waste from reaching the sea.
Through International Coastal Cleanup Day 2026, the Indian Coast Guard reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Goa’s coastline and marine ecosystems while promoting greater public awareness about responsible and sustainable use of the seas.*** Source-Indian Coast Guard, Goa/PIB Panaji/AY/PK
