The Union Cabinet approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025 on July 1, 2025, superseding the National Sports Policy of 2001. This policy aims to establish India as a global sporting powerhouse, with a strategic roadmap for excellence in international events, including a potential bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. The NSP 2025 was developed through extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including Central Ministries, NITI Aayog, State Governments, National Sports Federations (NSFs), athletes, experts, and the public.
The policy is structured around five key pillars: (1) achieving excellence on the global stage through strengthened sports programs, competitive leagues, infrastructure development, and advanced athlete support systems; (2) promoting sports for economic development by fostering sports tourism, strengthening the sports manufacturing ecosystem, and encouraging private sector participation; (3) utilizing sports for social development by promoting inclusion among underrepresented groups, revitalizing traditional games, and integrating sports into education and career pathways; (4) establishing sports as a people's movement through mass participation initiatives, fitness campaigns, and enhanced access to facilities; and (5) integrating sports with education, in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, by incorporating sports into school curricula and providing specialized training for educators.
The NSP 2025 outlines a comprehensive implementation strategy that includes establishing a robust regulatory framework for sports governance, developing innovative financing mechanisms, leveraging technology for performance tracking and research, creating a national monitoring framework with defined benchmarks and KPIs, and encouraging States and Union Territories to align their policies with national objectives.
