Otherwise, the financial constraints and limited access to educational resources can prevent deserving students from pursuing higher education and advanced research.

Smt. Yatla Sravanthi, a 37-year-old resident of Karimnagar district, Telangana, successfully completed her research in Botany with financial assistance under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste (NFSC) Scheme. Her fellowship assistance began in 2017, and she availed support in the form of fellowship, House Rent Allowance and contingency assistance amounting to Rs. 21 lakh.

Before receiving assistance, Smt. Sravanthi faced severe financial difficulties in continuing her higher education and doctoral research. Her family’s financial situation made it difficult to meet expenses related to books, research materials, equipment and hostel accommodation. These constraints affected her ability to focus fully on her studies and research.

She also faced limited access to quality educational resources, internet facilities and appropriate academic guidance. Coming from a remote area and facing social and economic disadvantages, pursuing doctoral- level education was particularly challenging. Without financial support, she could have been compelled to take loans or interrupt her education to seek employment.

The NFSC Scheme provided Smt. Sravanthi with financial stability and enabled her to devote greater time and attention to her doctoral research. The monthly fellowship helped reduce the economic burden associated with her education and living expenses, while the contingency assistance enabled her to procure essential books, research materials and software required for her academic work.

The fellowship also enabled her to participate in national seminars and workshops. These opportunities allowed her to present her research findings, interact with experts, receive academic feedback and develop professional networks. Such exposure strengthened her academic experience and broadened her access to the research community. With the support of the NFSC Scheme, Smt. Sravanthi was able to pursue her research with greater confidence and complete her academic work. The fellowship strengthened her research profile and created opportunities for professional interaction and networking. At a personal level, the reduction in financial pressure on her family brought greater confidence and independence.

Today, Smt. Sravanthi aspires to build a career in higher education or policy research and to use her academic experience to mentor students from underrepresented backgrounds. Her journey demonstrates how timely financial assistance can help scholars overcome economic and social barriers, pursue advanced research and realise their academic potential.
