The Maharashtra government has published the Legislative Assembly Bill No. LXXI of 2025, concerning the provision of pension payments to agriculturists, artisans, and landless laborers in the State of Maharashtra. The bill, set to be known as "The Maharashtra Agriculturist, Artisan, and Landless Labourer Pension Act, 2025," aims to provide a monthly pension of ₹1,000 from the consolidated fund of the state to eligible individuals who have completed 55 years of age and have applied for the pension.
To be eligible, the applicant must have been a resident of Maharashtra for at least five years immediately before applying. An individual will be ineligible if they are cared for by an institution for the elderly, sick, or disabled, or if any member of their family is employed in government, semi-government, or statutory corporation service.
The State Government has the authority to specify the date from which the act will come into force through official notification in the Gazette, and also, the authority to make rules to carry out the purposes of the Act. These rules will be presented before each house of the State Legislature.
The bill is driven by the fact that a significant portion of Maharashtra's population residing in villages depends on agriculture, craftsmanship, and manual labor. Considering the service they have rendered, it is necessary to support them during their old age with financial assistance.
The estimated recurring expenditure for providing pensions to eligible agriculturists, artisans, and landless labourers from the State's Consolidated Fund has financial implications but is not quantifiable at this time.
