The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced significant progress in the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), aimed at establishing India as a global leader in the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen. Under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Mode - 2B scheme, a total green hydrogen production capacity of 30 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) has been awarded to the refining sector.
Capacity Allocations and Locations: The 30 KTPA capacity has been distributed across four major refineries:
- Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Panipat): 10 KTPA
- Numaligarh Refineries Limited (Numaligarh): 10 KTPA
- Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (Bina): 5 KTPA
- Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (Vizag): 5 KTPA
Implementation and Strategic Objectives: The projects are being executed under a Build Own Operate (BOO) arrangement. Private developers will manage the implementation, providing project-specific investments. The initiative is designed to:
- Reduce national reliance on imported fossil fuels.
- Enhance domestic energy security.
- Support India’s transition toward clean energy and achieve net-zero objectives.
