The Regional Office, Mumbai (Field Operations Division) of the National Statistics
Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI),
Government of India, celebrated the 20th National Statistics Day on June 29, 2026, at
Fr. Palacious Hall, St. Xavier's College, Fort, Mumbai, in collaboration with St.
Xavier's College. The event commemorated the birth anniversary of Prof. P. C.
Mahalanobis, the pioneer of modern statistics in India and architect of the country's
official statistical system.
The theme of this year's National Statistics Day, "Unlocking the Potential of
Administrative Data," underscored the growing importance of administrative data in
evidence-based policymaking, effective governance, and socio-economic planning.The programme also highlighted the pivotal role of the National Sample Survey (NSS)
and the National Statistics Office (NSO) in strengthening India's official statistical
system.
The programme was graced by Dr. Nirupama J. Dange, IAS, Director, Directorate of
Census Operations, Mumbai, as the Chief Guest, and Dr. R. B. Barman, Former
Chairman, National Statistical Commission and Former Executive Director, Reserve
Bank of India, as the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries present included Smt. P. A.
Mini, Deputy Director General, National Statistics Office, Mumbai; Dr. Karuna
Gokarna, Principal, St. Xavier's College, Fort, Mumbai; and Shri Alok Kumar, Director,
Office of the Director General of Foreign Trade, Mumbai.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Heads of Departments, faculty
members, and students from various colleges and institutions across Mumbai. More
than 100 officers and officials of the National Statistics Office (Field Operations
Division), Regional Office, Mumbai, also attended the programme.
In her keynote address, Dr. Nirupama J. Dange, IAS, highlighted the growing
significance of administrative data in evidence-based governance and public policy
formulation. She explained the complementary role of administrative data and Census
data in planning and implementing government programmes and encouraged citizens
to actively participate in official data collection exercises, emphasizing that quality
data forms the foundation of effective policymaking and inclusive development.
Addressing the gathering, Smt. P. A. Mini, Deputy Director General, NSO, paid tribute
to the enduring legacy of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis and highlighted his pioneering
contribution to building India's statistical institutions and scientific statistical
framework, which continues to guide the country's official statistical system.Dr. R. B. Barman emphasized the critical importance of reliable official statistics for
sound economic planning and governance. He underlined the increasing relevance of
administrative data in the evolving statistical ecosystem and stressed the need to
uphold the highest standards of data quality, transparency, and credibility.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Rupali Dashrath
Karne, Deputy Director, National Statistics Office (FOD), Mumbai.
