DATA AND AI LABS

Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to
state:
(a) the number of Data and AI Labs operational under the IndiaAI Mission and the funds released
and utilised therefor, State-wise;
(b) the number of research projects, patents, AI applications and start-ups supported through
such labs, State-wise;
(c) the number of academic and industry partnerships established by these labs, State-wise;
(d) the number of students, researchers and professionals trained through these labs and the
details of courses or certification programmes offered; and
(e) whether any proposal for establishment of a Data and AI Lab in Andhra Pradesh is under
consideration and if so, the details and its present status thereof?

(a) to (e): IndiaAI Mission:
India’s AI policy is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of democratizing
technology. It is aimed at creating economic opportunities and employment for youth, while
addressing risks associated with it.
India’s AI strategy builds on India’s vibrant IT sector with annual revenue of 300 billion dollars
and 60 Lakh strong workforce. India AI Mission supports India’s AI ambitions under seven
pillars including development of AI models, applications, datasets, talent development and
affordable compute.
AI models:
The Government of India is supporting Indian startups and institutions to develop large
language models.
20 indigenous sovereign model proposals have been identified for support, comprising 12
LLMs and 8 SLMs. Notable successes so far include:
• Sarvam AI’s Sarvam 30 billion parameter and 105 billion parameter models
• Gnani.AI’s speech-to-speech model
• BharatGen’s multilingual foundation models• Avataar AI’s video generation model
Domain-specific SLMs, include specialized models and AI frameworks addressing healthcare,
language technologies and agentic AI systems are at various stages of development and
deployment.
Affordable compute:
• Compute service providers empanelled: 15
• Number of projects supported: 237
• GPU hours sanctioned: 93.18 lakh GPU hours
Application Development:
• 12 National-level Hackathons/Innovation Challenges launched.
• Supported the development of 62 AI prototypes and 20 AI solutions deployment
Talent development:
• 686 fellowships have been awarded across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral
programmes in 178 institutions.
• YUVA AI for All programme has been completed by over 26.5 lakh individuals.
IndiaAI Data and AI Labs
Under the IndiaAI FutureSkills pillar these are being established to create AI-ready talent by
providing hands-on training in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and related emerging
technologies, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The primary objective of these Data and
AI Labs is capacity building and skill development. Accordingly, the labs are focusing on
training and certification activities.
• The 27 IndiaAI Data and AI Labs established at NIELIT Centres are operational, and the
State-wise details are placed at Annexure-I. An amount of ₹8.29 crore has been released
for the establishment of these labs and for conducting training and assessment activities.
• The courses currently offered in these labs include Fundamentals of Data Annotation
using Python, Fundamentals of Data Curation using Python, and other foundational AI
modules aimed at enhancing learners' employability and industry readiness. As of date,
5,544 candidates have been enrolled, 3,161 candidates have been trained, and 1,249
candidates have been certified under these labs.
• Further, an amount of Rs.9.58 Cr. has been released for the establishment of 188 IndiaAI
Data and AI Labs in ITIs and Polytechnics. These institutions are currently undertaking
procurement and infrastructure development activities and are yet to become operational.
• With regard to Andhra Pradesh, 21 ITIs and 7 Polytechnic institutions have been selected
for establishment of IndiaAI Data and AI Labs. An amount of Rs. 1.07 Cr. has been
released to the selected ITIs, and the institutions are currently undertaking procurement
and infrastructure setup activities. The details of these ITI institutions are placed at
Annexure-II.
