ALLOCATION OF FUNDS UNDER JJM

Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state:
(a) whether the approved funds available to the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation
under the central sector scheme ‘Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)’ amounted to approximately Rs.
22,500 crore as on 31/03/2024 and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Department sought, through Demand No. 63 in the Union Budget, 2024–25, a total
allocation of approximately Rs. 70,000 crore under JJM;
(c) if so, whether this additional amount was duly approved by the concerned authorities in the
Union Government prior to its inclusion in the Demand for Grants under the Union Budget,
2024– 25 and if so, the details thereof; and
(d) if not, the reasons for the discrepancy between the amount sought for allocation and the amount
duly authorised and available for allocation therein?

(a) To make provision of tap water supply to every rural household across the country, Government
of India, in partnership with States, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), a centrally sponsored
scheme, since August 2019. Significant progress has been made in the country since the launch of
JJM, towards enhancing access to tap water to rural households. At the start of JJM in August 2019,
in the country only 3.23 crore (16.72%) rural households were reported to have tap water
connections. So far, as reported by States/ UTs, around 12.59 crore additional rural households have
been provided with tap water connections under JJM. Thus, as on 28.01.2026, out of 19.36 crore
rural households in the country, more than 15.79 crore (81.57%) households are reported to have tap
water supply in their homes.
