Parliament Question: Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Projects across Tamil Nadu

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF LAW AND JUSTICE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3383 TO BE ANSWERED ON FRIDAY, THE 07th AUGUST, 2026 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) BASED PROJECTS ACROSS TAMIL NADU 3383. SHRI NAVASKANI K: Will the Minister of LAW AND JUSTICE be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has initiated any Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based pilot projects in the High Court of Madras and district courts across Tamil Nadu for case management, legal research, translation, transcription and reduction of case pendency and the details thereof; (b) the details of AI-enabled e-Courts and digital justice initiatives implemented in Tamil Nadu, including the number of courts covered, funds allocated and measurable outcomes achieved; (c) whether the District and Subordinate Courts in Ramanathapuram district have been covered under any AI-based judicial initiatives and if not, the reasons therefor; (d) the safeguards adopted to ensure the ethical use of AI, prevent bias, protect judicial independence and secure sensitive judicial data; and (e) whether the Government proposes to extend AI-enabled judicial services to Ramanathapuram district through additional infrastructure, training and technical support and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) OF THE MINISTRY OF LAW AND JUSTICE; AND MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PARLIAMENTARY AFFAIRS (SHRI ARJUN RAM MEGHWAL) (a) to (e): The eCourts Mission Mode Project, under the National e-Governance Plan, is being implemented by Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, in coordination with the eCommittee, Supreme Court of India. Under the Phase-III of the Project, there is provision for adoption of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance judicial efficiency. 1e-Courts and Digital Initiatives like e-filing, NSTEP, e-Payment, etc, are functional in the courts in the State of Tamil Nadu for all Advocates/Litigants. The operational framework, including safeguards to ensure the ethical use of AI, prevent bias, protect judicial independence and secure sensitive judicial data, governing the deployment and future use of AI-based solutions, is decided, in accordance with the Rules of Business and the policies of Supreme Court of India and respective High Courts. The implementation of AI-enabled judicial services in District Courts falls strictly within the jurisdiction of the respective High Courts, which take decisions in consultation with, the eCommittee, Supreme Court of India. As per the information provided by the eCommittee, Supreme Court of India, no AI Based Pilot project has been initiated in the High Court of Madras and District and Subordinate Courts, across the State of Tamil Nadu, including District and Subordinate Courts in Ramanathapuram district. *** 2
