GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2071 ANSWERED ON 10.03.2026 BIO-ENERGY GENERATION FROM SUGARCANE WASTE 2071. SHRI IRANNA KADADI Will the Minister of NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY be pleased to state: (a) the potential of bio-energy generation from the sugarcane waste (bagasse, press mud) in the Belagavi district; (b) the details of the Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants commissioned or proposed under the SATAT initiative; (c) the measures taken to promote the waste-to-energy projects for managing municipal solid waste; (d) the status of the biomass power projects operational in the district; (e) the Government's roadmap to promote the bio-energy sector in the sugar belt? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR NEW & RENEWABLE ENERGY AND POWER (SHRI SHRIPAD YESSO NAIK) (a) Based on the inputs received from the State Government of Karnataka, Belagavi district has 29 sugar factories with an estimated bio-energy potential of about 783.55 MW from sugarcane waste such as bagasse. Further, based on the sugar crushing capacity of 205200 Tonnes Crushed per Day (TCD) in the district, an estimated biogas generation potential from press mud is 574560 m3/day. (b) As on 28.02.2026, a total of 194 CBG projects have been commissioned under the Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan) including Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, out of which 20 Compressed Biogas (CBG) projects (including plants under the SATAT initiative) have been established in the State of Karnataka. Further, as per the Gobardhan portal data, one CBG plant in Belagavi district has been commissioned. (c) The Waste to Energy programme implemented by this Ministry under the Phase-I of National Bioenergy Programme (NBP) inter-alia supports setting of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) for energy generation through biomethanation route. As per the information provided by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), under Solid Waste Management component of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, Central Financial Assistance (CFA) is provided for setting up various type of waste processing facilities such as Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), Waste to Compost (WtC) plants, Bio-methanation plants, Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) processing facilities, Waste to Electricity (WtE) plants, Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste plants, sanitary landfill including CBG plant. (d) As per information provided by Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Agency (KREDL), 24 biomass power projects are operational in the district of Belagavi. (e) The Ministry of New and Renewable energy has been implementing the Waste to Energy programme under the Phase-I of NBP, which inter-alia supports setting up of bioenergy projects to utilize the biogenic waste generated in the sugar belt. *****
