CARBON NEUTRALITY INITIATIVE

Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION
be pleased to state:-
a) the details of the steps taken till date regarding the progress of carbon neutrality
initiatives at various airports across the country;
(b) the details of total number of airports across the country that have successfully
achieved carbon neutrality and the levels of accreditation received in recognition of
their sustainability efforts;
(c) the details of total number of Greenfield airports constructed in the country since
2014 and the number out of these airports actively working towards achieving carbon
neutrality; and
(d) the percentage of airports currently operating on 100 percent green energy and
whether the Government has devised any mechanism to monitor and support the said
initiative and if so, the details thereof?
ANSWER
Minister of State in the Ministry of CIVIL AVIATION (Shri Murlidhar Mohol)
(a): Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has taken following initiatives for working
towards Carbon neutrality at airports in the country:;
i) Organised knowledge sharing sessions to standardise Carbon Accounting and
Reporting framework of Indian Airports as well as to create awareness on Climate
Change mitigation.
ii) All the operational airports with scheduled operations have been advised to work
towards achieving Carbon Neutrality & Net Zero which inter-alia includes use of green
energy.
iii) Advised all the States/UTs to ensure Carbon Emission reduction measures and
achieving Net Zero target ab-initio by incorporating design/standards in the Greenfield
airport development proposal, DPR, Airport Master plan etc.
iv) A training module has been created as a part of induction training programme for
Air Traffic Controllers to sensitize them towards Carbon Neutrality.
v) Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) has been advised to take
into account the cost associated with the Green Energy use for Airport Tariff
Determination.(b): At present, 4 airports in the country namely, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and
Hyderabad have achieved Airports Council International (ACI) Carbon Accreditation
Level 5 and become Carbon Neutral.
(c): 13 Greenfield airports viz. Durgapur, Shirdi, Kannur, Pakyong, Kalaburagi,
Orvakal (Kurnool), Sindhudurg, Kushinagar, Itanagar, Mopa, Shivamogga, Rajkot
(Hirasar) and Navi Mumbai have been operationalised under Greenfield Airports
Policy, 2008 since 2014. MoCA has advised all the States/UTs and operational airports
with scheduled operations to work towards achieving Carbon Neutrality & Net Zero
which inter-alia includes use of green energy.
(d): As on 03.02.2026, 99 airports operate on 100% Green Energy. In a bid to support
& encourage airport operators to achieve 100% green energy usage at airports, AERA
takes into account the cost associated with the Green Energy usage, while determining
Airport Tariff.
