Parliament Question: Cases against social media activists in Andhra Pradesh

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2480 TO BE ANSWERED ON 13.03.2026 CASES AGAINST SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVISTS IN ANDHRA PRADESH 2480. SHRI YERRAM VENKATA SUBBA REDDY: Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state: (a) whether it is a fact that many States, including Andhra Pradesh, resort to registering cases against social media activists and against those who are questioning the law and order situation, implementation of schemes and programmes of Government; (b) the number of social media activists that have been arrested during the last two years, State- wise and month-wise; and (c) the manner in which Government protect social media activists from registering illegal cases against them by not following the due process of law? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SHRI JITIN PRASADA) (a) to (c): ‘Police’ and ‘Public Order’ are State subjects under the seventh schedule of constitution. Therefore, the primary responsibility for prevention, detection, registration, investigation and prosecution of such cases lies with the respective State Governments and Union Territory Administrations. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) compiles and publishes the statistical data on crimes in its publication “Crime in India”. The latest published report is for the year 2023.
