Parliament Question: Clean Energy Transition and Gas Infrastructure

LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3416 TO BE ANSWERED ON 12th MARCH, 2026 CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION AND GAS INFRASTRUCTURE † 3416. SHRI UTKARSH VERMA MADHUR: पेट(cid:332)ोिलयम और (cid:366)ाकृ ितक गैस मं(cid:361)ी Will the Minister of PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS be pleased to state: (a) the plan for the oil and gas industry to deal with the challenges of aligning with the growing demand for clean energy; (b) the action plan of the Government to tackle the shortage of the CNG outlets keeping in view the fact that the CNG outlets are quite less in number at present particularly at block or division level due to which consumers have to wait for long durations to get CNG filled; (c) the action plan for expanding the National Gas Grid Pipeline and the Urban Gas Distribution Network; and (d) whether the Indian companies are contemplating on various schemes keeping in view the increasing demand of gas in the domestic market and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER पेट(cid:332)ोिलयम और (cid:366)ाकृ ितक गैस मं(cid:361)ालय म(cid:336) रा(cid:475) मं(cid:361)ी ((cid:373)ी सुरेश गोपी) MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS (SHRI SURESH GOPI) (a) to (d) Oil and Gas industry is taking all efforts to increase share of natural gas, biofuels, green hydrogen and renewable energy in the energy mix which inter-alia include increasing share of natural gas in primary energy mix; increasing ethanol blending in petrol, blending of biodiesel in diesel; setting up compressed biogas plants under Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT); developing green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) per annum and installation of Alternate Fuel Stations (EV charging). Providing Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections, establishment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations and laying of pipeline infrastructure are part of the development of City Gas Distribution (CGD) Network which is carried out by the entities authorized by Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) as per their Minimum Work Programme (MWP) and techno-commercial feasibility. The Government and PNGRB monitor the progress of CGD networks and advises the entity to resolve their issues.PNGRB has authorized entities for development of CGD network in 307 Geographical Areas (GAs), covering the entire mainland area for the development of CGD network across the country. The spread of natural gas in the country is also facilitated by the development of National Gas Grid which supports the GAs to access gas. PNGRB has authorized approximately 34200 km of NGPL network which include common carrier, spur line, tie-in connectivity and dedicated pipeline across the country to various entities. Upon completion of under construction pipeline, the National Gas Grid will connect all major demand centres ensuring availability of Natural Gas across all regions. As part of PNGRB’s National PNG Drive 2.0, all authorized entities are actively undertaking targeted consumer outreach and promotional initiatives which inter alia includes enhanced stakeholder engagement, consumer outreach, and operational focus across the GA to accelerate the adoption of domestic PNG connections. *****
