The fire is being extinguished by digging out through excavation or blanketing by overburden (OB). To monitor the success of this process, Bharat Coking Coal Limited periodically conducts surveys through the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad, for delineation of surface fires. As per the NRSC survey report of the year 2017-18, the surface fire area was 3.26 sq. km, which has reduced to 1.53 sq. km in the year 2024-25. Drone based Scientific study using Thermal Infra-Red Sensor (TIR Survey) has been conducted by Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) to map the extent of mine fire. Based upon this study, Mining Plan is under preparation at CMPDIL, to dig out the existing fire through opencast working.
