Parliament Question: Consumption Data of Chemical Fertiliser and Pesticide

SHRI CHARANJIT SINGH CHANNI: Will the Minister of CHEMICALS AND FERTILIZERS be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government is aware that the State of Punjab records among the highest per hectare consumption of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in the country, if so, the details thereof; (b) the fertiliser and pesticide consumption data for Punjab during the last three years, year-wise; (c) the steps taken to promote balanced fertiliser use, nano-fertilisers and sustainable agricultural practices in the State; and (d) whether any special incentive or awareness programme is proposed to help Punjab transition towards environmentally sustainable farming while protecting farmer incomes and food security, if so, the details thereof? Punjab 5130.00 5216.00 5110.00 (c) & (d): In order to promote the use of Nano Fertilizers among farmers across the country including the State of Punjab, Department of Fertilsers has undertaken the following measures : i. Use of Nano Fertilizers is promoted through different activities such as awareness camps, webinars, field demonstrations, Kisan Sammelans and films in regional languages etc. ii. Nano Fertilizers are made available at Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras by concerned companies. iii. Nano Fertilizers has been included under monthly supply plan issued by Department of Fertilizers regularly. iv. For ease in application and utilization of Nano fertilizers like Nano Urea, initiatives such as innovative spraying options like 'Kisan Drones' and distribution of battery- operated Sprayers at retail points are undertaken. For this purpose, pilot training and custom hiring spraying services through Village Level Entrepreneurs are actively promoted. v. Department of Fertilizers in collaboration with fertilizer companies has initiated a Maha Abhiyan for adoption of Nano Diammonium Phosphate in all 15 agro-climatic zones of the country through consultations and field level demonstrations. vi. A campaign has been launched for field level demonstrations and awareness programs of Nano Urea plus in 100 districts of the country. Further, to promote the judicious and balanced use of fertilisers and sustainable agriculture practices in the country, including the state of Punjab, following initiatives have been taken by the Department of Fertilizers :  The Government of India has implemented the Soil Health & Fertility Scheme. The core objective of the scheme is to provide Soil Health Cards to all farm holdings in the country in order to promote balanced and Integrated Nutrient Management for improving soil fertility, crop productivity, and sustainability of agriculture. The card assesses soil health across various parameters and is issued every two years. As on date, more than 25.90 Crore Soil Health Cards have been distributed across the country. The soil health cards provides farmers with a comprehensive understanding of the nutrient status and conditions of their soils. It also offers crop-specificrecommendations on the appropriate use of chemical and bio-fertilizers for informed decision-making and long-term soil health management.  The Government on June 28, 2023, approved the 'PM Programme for Restoration, Awareness Generation, Nourishment, and Amelioration of Mother-Earth' scheme. All States/UTs are covered under the said scheme. The scheme includes a provision to incentivise States and UTs to reduce chemical fertilizer consumption (urea, DAP, NPK, and MOP) by way of adoption of eco-friendly alternatives such as organic manure, bio- fertilizers, and compost. During FY 2023–24, 14 States recorded a reduction of 15.14 lakh metric tonnes in chemical fertilizer consumption relative to the average consumption of chemical fertilisers for the previous 3 financial years.  In addition to the above, Kisan Sangoshthis are conducted by Department of Fertilizers along with fertilizer companies for extensive field interaction with farmers, local farmer cooperatives, panchayats focusing on issues such as balanced use of fertilizers, integrated nutrient management, promotion of organic farming, and soil health improvement. 24 Fertiliser Marketing Companies conducted 17,108 Camps/Kisan Sangoshthis across the Country during February 2025 to February 2026. These camps also feature technical sessions on appropriate fertilizer dosages, crop-specific application techniques, and the benefits of organic inputs. *****
